Beware of check fraud. Consider writing fewer checks to help keep your information secure

Paper checks contain personal information, and whomever gets their hands on the check can see that info. Check fraud occurs when a criminal obtains money illegally using stolen checks or check information. Scammers often target the mail to steal checks and other personal or financial information with the intent to commit fraud and identity theft. They may even alter a check payee, dollar amount or the forge endorsement. Don't let this happen to you.

How to help protect against check fraud:

  • Pay or send money using digital payment methods such as Bill Pay or Zelle®.1
  • Set up direct deposit to have your money automatically sent to your account. Turn on transaction alerts to keep track of the amount of money that comes out of your account. Make sure the check amounts match what comes out of your account. You can view check images on the website or app.
  • Keep original paper checks which you have deposited through the app in a safe and secure place for one week from the date of the deposit acknowledgment, and then shred them.
  • Consider sending checks through certified mail (particularly high-value checks) or a secured mailbox . Make sure you confirm receipt with the intended check recipient.
  • Review your deposit account activity and bank statements frequently and notify us immediately if you spot any unusual activity. Refer to the deposit agreement governing your account.
  • Treat your checkbooks like cash, and always store them in a safe place.

There are many benefits of digital banking such as convenient ways to deposit money, make payments and move money. But, most importantly, you’re in control of your accounts and can set up features to help protect yourself from fraud and scams.
